Seoul Aquarium Opening Hours and Feeding Times

Opening times, last admission and the entry step for each aquarium, read from the operators' own pages in August 2026. The closing times are where the two diverge.

Both aquariums fill from late morning, peak mid-afternoon and stay heavy until early evening at weekends. The tunnels are where that is felt: a 15:00 Saturday walk through Lotte's 85 metres moves at the pace of the slowest phone.

The reliable quiet window at both is the first hour after opening on a weekday. The better one exists only at Lotte. Arriving after 19:00, when COEX has already stopped admitting and the mall crowd has thinned. A July 2026 visitor described the opposite experience: "it was very crowded because seoul was hot today", which is the other pattern worth knowing. In a heatwave or a downpour, every indoor attraction in Seoul fills at once.

Holidays override all of it. Both aquariums decorate for Christmas and both are packed for it; one reviewer who went to COEX on 25 December noted "there were especially a lot of people". Korean public holidays and school breaks do the same.

Neither aquarium publishes a schedule you can plan a train around, and COEX says why: the times depend on tank conditions and season, and the current list is posted at the entrance rather than online. Photograph the board on the way in and build your loop around it. It is the difference between watching a shark feed and hearing about it afterwards.

At Lotte, feeding sessions cluster around midday, with the shark feed following the smaller animals. A reviewer in July 2026 recommended staying for it specifically. COEX runs feeding demonstrations and a mermaid show, both in Korean; the performance element carries fine without the language, and one visitor caught a Little Mermaid version, another a Christmas-themed one, the shows change with the season.

If a feed matters to you, go early rather than late. The morning sessions are the ones least likely to be moved.

By size, the best aquarium in Korea is not in Seoul. Aqua Planet Jeju holds 10,800 tonnes of water and the country's largest single tank at 5,300 cubic metres. Roughly three times what either Seoul aquarium holds. If your standard is scale, that is the one, and it needs a flight.

Within Seoul the honest ranking is by what you want. Lotte World Aquarium has the better tanks and the longer hours; SEA LIFE COEX has more zones, more small displays and a mall attached. Both hold about 3,500 tonnes of water and around 650 species, so any claim that one is dramatically bigger than the other does not survive the figures.

Allow ninety minutes inside plus travel. At COEX the voucher scans at the gate, so the only queue is the one you make yourself by arriving at 14:00 on a Saturday. At Lotte, add ten minutes at the group ticket booth to exchange the voucher for a paper ticket. A step that surprises people who booked expecting to walk straight in.

A workable Gangnam afternoon: arrive at Bongeunsa Exit 7 around 10:15, photograph the feeding board, walk the route once, and be out by 11:45 with the whole of Starfield COEX Mall still ahead of you. A workable Jamsil evening: arrive at Jamsil Exit 11 around 19:00, collect the paper ticket while the mall crowd thins, and have the 85-metre tunnel to yourself for most of the walk.

The one combination to avoid is both aquariums back to back on a weekend afternoon. Three hours of dim corridors at peak crowd is the version of this day nobody enjoys. And if you are doing both anyway, the the attraction pass prices it better than two separate tickets.

SEA LIFE COEX closes at 20:00 but stops admitting at 19:00, so an hour of the published opening hours is not available to anyone arriving late. Since a walk-through takes an hour to ninety minutes, a 19:00 arrival is a rushed visit rather than a relaxed one, and staff begin clearing the route before closing.

Lotte World Aquarium publishes hours to 22:00, and its own page is the place to confirm the last admission for your date, because the complex adjusts its schedule around the theme park and seasonal events. Build in the ten minutes needed at the ticket booth before the gate.

The practical rule for both: arrive at least ninety minutes before closing if you want the full route at your own pace, and two hours if you want to wait out a feeding session.

There is one more reason not to cut it fine. Neither aquarium allows re-entry, so if you arrive late, discover you are hungry and step out to the food court, that is the visit over. Eat first, then scan in.

Seoul's summer is hot and humid, its monsoon weeks in July are genuinely wet, and its winter is cold enough that an underground mall becomes the whole afternoon. Every one of those conditions pushes people into the same two aquariums. A visitor in July 2026 opened a five-star review with the explanation rather than a complaint: it was very crowded because Seoul was hot that day.

So the weather forecast is the crowd forecast. A clear, mild weekday in spring or autumn is the quietest an aquarium gets; the first properly rainy Saturday of the monsoon is the worst.

School holidays and Korean public holidays layer on top. Both aquariums decorate for Christmas, both run seasonal exhibits, and both are packed for them. If your dates are fixed and they land on a holiday, use the opening hour or, at Lotte, the last two hours of the evening.

None of this makes either aquarium unpleasant, and neither is large enough for crowding to ruin the route. It changes how long you queue at the tunnel and whether you get a clear view of the main tank, which for a photograph is the difference that matters.

Two practical consequences. First, if you only have a weekend afternoon, choose COEX: its route is wider and copes better with a crowd than a single-file tunnel does. One caveat on the late slot. The final hour is when staff begin closing sections and the gift shop starts cashing up, so arriving at 21:00 for a 22:00 close is not a full visit. Aim to be inside by 19:30.
