SEA LIFE COEX, Seoul Aquarium Ticket

One walk through 14 discovery zones on a fixed one-way route, holding about 40,000 animals of some 650 species across 183 display tanks and 90 breeding tanks — roughly 3,500 tonnes of water in total. The set piece is the Deep Blue Sea Tunnel: an acrylic walkway under 2,000 tonnes of water with sharks and sea turtles passing overhead.

Around it sit the zones COEX is actually known for. Story of Korean Fish opens the route with local river species, Secret Garden of Seahorses and Sea at Night are the quiet dark rooms, Penguin's Playground and Seal Beach Cove hold the animals children come for, and Wonderland is the odd one — fish kept in a shower cubicle, a bathtub, an old computer monitor and a toilet bowl. Touch pools with starfish and shellfish sit near the end of the route.

The ticket includes none of the extras. The digital photo package, the VR add-on and the jellyfish-bowl workshop are separate purchases sold on the aquarium's own site, and the ₩4,800 mall parking is not covered either.

How long it takes

The listing suggests one to three hours. Dated reviews are more consistent than that: most people walk it in an hour to ninety minutes. One reviewer put it at "around 1-1.5 hour" and added the honest caveat that it is "not that cheap at all, because it is not very big" — a fair reading, and the reason the comparison with Lotte is worth two minutes before you buy.

If a feeding is scheduled while you are inside, add half an hour. The schedule is posted on a board at the entrance rather than online, because times move with tank conditions and season. Photograph it on the way in.

Not always, and it depends entirely on who is standing at the gate with you. COEX publishes both its own prices, so the comparison below is checkable rather than a claim. Figures were read on 27 August 2026 and converted at ₩1,380 to the dollar.

So: a couple books here and saves a token amount plus the convenience of one app. A family of three books on the aquarium's website and keeps about ₩3,600. Two adults with a seven-year-old are the clearest case — the child alone costs ₩3,400 more here than on the official site, for the same seat at the same tank.

What this listing gives that the official advance ticket does not is the refund. Cancel any time before you redeem and you get everything back, which matters on a Seoul itinerary that is still moving. And if you are already comparing the Lotte ticket, note that the discount story is completely different there: that one really is about a quarter under its gate price.

The aquarium sits on the basement level of Starfield COEX Mall at 513 Yeongdong-daero in Gangnam. Two stations serve it and the obvious one is the slower one.

Line 9 to Bongeunsa Station, Exit 7, drops you on the aquarium's own basement floor — the operator marks it as the closest way and it is a short indoor walk. Line 2 to Samseong Station, Exit 5 or 6, is the route most guides print, and it is a 10 to 15 minute walk through the mall. Either way you never step outside, which is why this is Seoul's default rainy-day and heatwave attraction.

At the gate, show the mobile voucher and your passport. There is no booth to queue at and no paper ticket to collect — one reviewer who bought on site noted it still took a couple of minutes to process, which is the queue you are skipping. Use Naver Map or KakaoMap to navigate; Google Maps does not give reliable walking directions in Korea.

The page ranking second for this search calls COEX's theming "fake plastic" and says the decoration crowds out the animals. That is a real criticism and visitors echo it: plenty of the vegetation is artificial, some sections feel cramped at peak hours, and the flow between zones is uneven — a few exhibits are beautifully done and a few read as filler.

Against that, the same rooms get consistently warm write-ups from families. A reviewer in May 2026: "the themed zones make the experience more interesting, and it's enjoyable for both kids and adults", with the aquarium "easy to explore and not too overwhelming". Another noted most signage is in English as well as Korean, which is not true of every attraction in Seoul.

Both are describing the same aquarium accurately. If you want naturalistic habitat design, book Lotte instead — its tanks are bigger and its tunnel is 85 metres. If you want an hour indoors with a child, in a mall with a food court and a cinema attached, this is the better buy and nobody's opinion of the plastic coral will change that.
